ALENTEJO

But Portugal has a peaceful feel about it. I sit on the terrace overlooking the vineyard there and feel cut off from the world. You need that sort of thing. -Cliff Richard

Unearth one of Portugal’s most precious hidden gems – Alentejo. This enormously beautiful region is not only known for it’s great nature and stunning architecture, but for it’s cuisine, traditional farming techniques and some of Portugal’s best wineries. There is a charm in Alentejo’s land of wheat fields, famous cork oak forests and olive groves, wildflower meadows and it’s tiny white-washed villages. To travel here is to step back in time. Life flows along at a leisurely pace.

We had the pleasure of discovering the best Alentejo has to offer while biking through the gorgeous countryside with InGamba.

Our first stop on the bike tour was through Evora.

Evora is an architectural treasure chest, which include a 12th century massive Gothic Cathedral and the Chapel of Bones. It is also one of the best places to eat local Portuguese fare. Stay at the Convento do Espinheiro, a 15th century monastery turned into a 5-star luxury boutique hotel. You could spend hours just walking the grounds and admiring the impeccable architecture. If walls could talk, the stories of Portuguese and several foreign monarchs whom visited this beautiful convent could fill a bookshelf.

Our second stop was through Monsaraz.

Monsaraz is one of the best places in Alentejo to escape the hustle and bustle of civilization. Perched atop a hill, this town is a genuine open-air museum with its labyrinth cobbled streets of wrought iron balconies and swinging street lamps, small 14th century churches, and a medieval castle.

Be sure to eat at Sabores de Monsaraz for the best of the best Portuguese food, and make sure you meet the very charming owner, Isabel. She may even bring out her homemade Grappa for you to try.

Stay at the enchanting Saõ Lourenço do Barrocal – an ancient farming village that has been brought back to life as an exceptional hotel of understated luxury. Surrounded by oaks, olive groves and vineyards, here you intimately feel connected to the greatness of the land.

Our third and final stop was through Vaiamonte.

Not far from the small village of Vaiamonte, at the heart of upper Alentejo, you will find Torre de Palma, Wine Hotel – a 5-star resort devoted to Alentejo wine. Contemporary design combined with traditional pieces are in perfect harmony with its natural surroundings. You will instantly feel right at home.

The resort’s tower is the perfect place to watch the sun cast a golden glow over the vineyards while the sky fades from blue to an orangey-pink.

Alentejo will be your tranquil escape into Portugal’s beautiful nature with exquisite cuisine and wine. The retreat you never knew you needed.
